Plumber holding reverse osmosis system parts

Looking for a plumber to install your home water filtration system can often be frustrating

However, by following these simple steps discussed in this post, which will show you how to hire a plumber to install a reverse osmosis system in your house, you can make sure that you are hiring the best experienced plumber for the job.

Why Hire a Professional Plumber?

It's possible that not all of your home repairs require the assistance of a trained expert. There are some repairs that are really simple to fix, and you can even do them on your own. However, problems with the plumbing, in most cases, are an exception to this rule.

In spite of the fact that they may look simple at first glance, many times they are among the most challenging aspects of home improvement projects. It's possible that your lackluster efforts will hurt the system as a whole.

If you live in the United States, there are a few specific reasons why you shouldn't try to fix the plumbing issue on your own but rather engage a professional plumber.

1. Taking Measures to Ensure Compliance with Plumbing Codes

It's possible that you're completely unaware that plumbing work is subject to rules that are imposed on a local, state, and even national level.

However, if your do-it-yourself remedy is not up to code, it may harm the value of your property when it comes time to sell it.

Professional plumbers that have had professional training are aware of these rules and will ensure that the repair complies with them.

2. They Deliver Service Of A High Standard.

When you choose an experienced plumber, you can be confident that the job they do will be of a high quality because of their level of expertise. When they are working, you don't have to worry about chasing after them to have a single problem resolved.

They are familiar with all of the precautions that should be taken, so they are aware of things such as which valve should be turned off or which pieces of machinery should be turned off before commencing their task.

When you install a system yourself, there is a lower likelihood that you will experience problems with the warranty or a shorter lifespan for the system as opposed to when you have it professionally done.

3. Safeguarding Your Own Personal Property

When you try to fix a plumbing problem on your own, you run the danger of unintentionally exposing your property to more harm, which is inevitable given the complexity of plumbing issues.

Professional plumbers are trained to prevent causing unintended harm to your home or business, but in the event that this does occur, they will take responsibility for their actions and make amends.

On the other hand, if you try to make repairs to your plumbing and end up accidentally damaging your property, you will be solely responsible for the costs associated with such repairs.

4. They Have The Necessary Tools And Equipment.

In order to get the best results, only professionally qualified plumbers will be equipped with the appropriate tools and materials. It is possible that a layperson might have a difficult time determining all of the essential tools to undertake the endeavor.

If you don't have the right information and understanding, you run the risk of buying things that you don't need, which will cause you to throw away your time, money, and effort.

5. Keeping a Clean Environment

Working in plumbing may be a nasty endeavor, particularly if it requires dealing with untreated sewage or outdated pipes. You could believe that you can manage it, but it's possible that you're underestimating how nasty the task is going to get.

If you hire a professional plumber, they will not be bothered by the mess at all, and once the job is done, they will clean up everywhere themselves so that you do not have to deal with it at all.

6. Taking Safety Measures

It is possible that you may put yourself in mortal danger by attempting to handle plumbing repairs on your own. Injuring yourself might happen if you come into contact with scalding hot water or if you try to lift and carry large pipes.

Both of these scenarios are possible. The force of the water, which you might not be able to manage, presents yet another threat to your personal safety when you are working on plumbing.

If you choose a professional plumber who is qualified to efficiently manage these risks, you won't have to worry about any of these potential dangers at all.

7. Professional Plumbers Are Insured.

If you attempt to install a new system or remedy a plumbing issue on your own, you may void any warranties that may apply in the event that the system, a valve, or the sewer line repair fails within a few months.

On the other hand, the vast majority of experienced plumbers will guarantee their work. For this reason, you may have peace of mind knowing that the plumber will fix the problem at no additional cost to you in the event that something goes wrong.

8. Professional Plumbers Are Versatile And Efficient.

To fix any and all plumbing problems, you need a plumber who is knowledgeable, skilled, and trustworthy.

Due to the fact that they have received the right training and qualifications, they are able to tackle a wide variety of plumbing problems that range in level of complexity.

Professional plumbers are also quite efficient, which means that they will be able to solve the issue in a very short period of time.

Can I Install A Reverse Osmosis System On My Own?

Yes, you can, because many home repairs or expansions are do-it-yourself chores. When it comes to plumbing lines, however, it is preferable to engage an expert plumber. You might be tempted to install a reverse osmosis system by yourself, but there are a few things that could go wrong, such as:

  • Leaks can be caused by faulty pipe cutting or soldering.
  • Improperly attached fittings might cause leaks in your plumbing system.
  • Backward or improper port alignment will render the water filtration system ineffective.

DIY RO Installation Procedure

Please read through all of the instructions and parts of the RO before you start the installation process.

1. Thoroughly Clean The Area Beneath The Sink

Before you begin, clear everything beneath the sink and ensure that there is enough space to install the RO system. Find the "cold" water shutoff valve as well as the sink drainpipe.

2. Turn Off The Cold Water Valve.

Under the sink or at the spot where the system will be installed, turn off the water supply designated as "cold." If the current "cold" water valve is dysfunctional, the house's water supply must be turned off. After the water supply has been cut off, the pressure in the pipe can be released by opening the cold water faucet.

3. Link To The Cold Water Line

When it comes to linking the reverse osmosis system up to the cold-water supply, you have a few different choices. They are as follows:

  1. Standard saddle valve — Attach the saddle valve clamp to the "cold" water line. Adjust the pipe clamp by turning the adjustment plate in the direction of the pipe's shape. (Small radius for 3/8" pipe, with a greater radius for pipes measuring 7/16" through 5/8" Tighten the bolt so that the saddle valve is securely linked to the feed water line (be careful not to over tighten).
  2. The EZ adapter.(Optional) Use Teflon tape to seal any leaks.Insert a 90-degree needle valve into the feed adapter.

To properly install a "flex line," first disconnect the flex line where it connects to the sink, then attach the feed adapter. Connect the flex line to the adaptor once again.

Disconnect the line at the sink and cut off roughly 34 inches for "solid line" installation "off the cuff." Install the feed adapter and link the line to it.

5. Installation of a Faucet:

The faucet should be placed with beauty, functionality, and ease in mind. The faucet base must have a large flat area so that the base nut may be securely tightened. Conditions may occur that make drilling a hole in the sink unnecessary.

Step One:. If a hole has already been drilled into the sink and a chrome plate cover has been placed over it, all that has to be done to install the faucet is to remove the cover.

Step two:. If a spray hose is present, it may or may not be functional. Take the spray hose from the main faucet and plug it into the outlet that's underneath it.

If your sprayer has one, remove the sprayer diverter from the base of the spout; otherwise, the sprayer diverter might accidentally pop up and prevent water from flowing out of the main faucet.

Step three:. If room is limited in the upper sink area, the faucet can be installed on the counter top at the sink's edge. Keep an eye out for impediments beneath the counter, such as drawers, cabinet walls, support braces, and so on.

In the event that the countertop is tiled with ceramic, the procedure for drilling the hole for the faucet will be the same as that used for drilling a porcelain sink.

Step four:. Although the drilling technique is not difficult, it does need some caution and planning. If the hole for the faucet assembly is not carefully drilled, porcelain enamel sinks might be damaged.

There are various methods for drilling holes in porcelain sinks without chipping them; we have discovered that these two approaches work quite well.

  • Remove the porcelain where the 1/4" diameter hole will be bored with a carbide grinding wheel. Drill a 1/4-inch-diameter hole in the metal. This approach produces a very clean, smooth hole.
  • Safely drill a 1/4-inch-diameter hole through the porcelain and metal sink using a heavy-duty variable-speed drill and a carbide-tipped drill bit.

Step five:. Drill a 1/4" diameter hole for stainless steel sinks. File the hole's edge lightly to ensure it is smooth and free of burrs. Metal chips should not be left on the porcelain surface of the sink for an extended period of time. Metal chips will discolor the sink and will be extremely tough to remove.

After drilling a hole in the sink, place the faucet stem into the hole. Assemble the faucet body, faucet base, and rubber faucet base washer above the sink.

Under the sink, attach the star lock washer and nut to the faucet stem, then forcefully tighten the nut while simultaneously orienting the faucet in the appropriate direction. After installing the faucet, tighten the 1/4" tubing towards the bottom of the shower nozzle stem.

Please keep in mind that certain states demand the use of an air gap faucet. To ensure that you are in compliance, check the plumbing laws in your locality. To avoid contamination and system fouling, keep the drain connections away from the trash compactor.

How Much Does It Cost To Have A Reverse Osmosis System Installed?

A whole-house reverse osmosis (RO) water filtering system generally costs between $480 and $2,900 to install.

Point-of-use RO systems range in price from $149.99 to $1,300. Commercial grade systems might cost anything from $1,000 to $20,000 or more. The key cost variables are the number of stages required for your water and the amount of water that has to be filtered.

RO systems eliminate contaminants from water by filtering it via a membrane in three or more stages. It necessitates regular filter replacements, but it offers great drinking water and aids in the removal of salts from the water softening process.

These are available in two varieties:

  • Point of Use (POU): A faucet, also known as a "point-of-service" or "single tap," treats only that faucet, such as a kitchen sink, shower, washer, or fridge.

  •  Point-of-Entry (POE): treats at the point where it enters your house, the main water line. Excellent for houses with water softeners or water that is very hard or chlorinated.

How Long Does It Take To Install A Water Filter?

Questions When Hiring A Professional Plumber.

Many homeowners may eventually reach a point in their lives where they require the assistance of a licensed plumber.

As a general guideline, you should establish practical facts with any contractor you employ before the work begins.

Here are six guidelines and questions to consider before hiring a plumber in the United States for your plumbing job:

- Are They Licensed?

This is the most important one. Asking this question is really important, so don't ever let it slip your mind, and don't simply take the plumber's word for it.

Many operate without a license, and many homeowners are under the impression that every plumber must have one. Because of this, it is important to raise this issue whenever possible.

When a plumber has a license, it means they are registered with a state or local agency that oversees their work.

What are the drawbacks to hiring a fantastic plumber who does not have a license?

It may be possible that his work will not be up to code at the end of the contract, and if this happens, you won't have much of a legal standing because you chose to hire him anyhow. Always ask.

- Do They Have Insurance?

Every day, mistakes are made. Unfortunately, plumbing errors may be expensive. You may avoid liability by ensuring that the plumber you select is insured.

Inquire about their worker's compensation, bonding, and builder's risk insurance. A plumber who is properly insured will assume the risk for you. You are not liable if something goes horribly wrong when they are repairing something on your property.

You will not have to pay for unforeseen fees if someone is hurt on your property if you choose a plumber who is properly insured.

- What Is Their Experience Level?

Many professional plumbing firms have more than one plumber on staff at any given time, and for really large jobs, they could even hire a whole crew of laborers.

Always be sure to find out whether the plumber who gives you an estimate is also the one who will complete the job.

If he says no, you should ask who will finish the project and how much experience and credentials that person has.

If the response makes you feel uneasy or if the plumber is unable to offer information, you might want to search elsewhere for a plumber.

-Do They Offer A Warranty On Their Work?

Ask the plumber what type of guarantee or warranty comes with their job before signing any contract.

Some companies will guarantee that they will return within a year to remedy any issues, while others will provide service just on specific fixtures inside a bathroom or under specific circumstances in the event that a leak develops.

Verify that the contractor is both bonded and insured, and that any form of guarantee or warranty that they provide is documented in writing.

If you want to be sure you hire a plumber who understands what they're doing, performs decent job, and won't leave you with a project that's only halfway done, here are seven questions you should ask prospective candidates before making a hiring decision.

- Can They Provide An Estimate?

Most skilled plumbers provide free estimates to consumers, but be aware of those that provide them over the phone. Most will visit to inspect the task before beginning work.

When your potential plumber has had a chance to inspect the task and presents you with a cost estimate, ask if the price includes supplies, labor, and a contingency for any difficulties.

Some estimates appear to be accurate on paper, but they just reflect the basic cost of materials and will increase as the work progresses.

- Where Are They Located?

A legitimate, trustworthy, and local plumbing firm will have a physical location where mail is delivered, which will be listed on its website.

This is significant since it provides a venue for consumers to attend if they have a question they'd want to ask in person or an issue they need to report.

Prepare Before The Plumber Arrives:

It's normal for anyone to feel anxious as they await the emergency plumber to come to their home. Here are some preventative measures you can take that will keep your mind busy, assist in minimizing the damage, and make it easier for the plumber to begin his work as soon as he arrives.

- Make Sure You Have All The Parts.

Whether you need to unclog drains, replace pipe fittings and valves, or fix other toilet pieces, it's important that you have all of the necessary parts available before the plumber (s) comes.

Preparing ahead of time will save you and the plumber valuable man-hours.

Find a plumbing store near you and choose from the toilet repair kits they have to keep your water flowing safely and in the right way.

- The Work Area Is Clear Of Clutter.

Make sure that everything is out of the way before the plumber arrives, and then clear the area completely. They will be able to reach the region more quickly and efficiently in order to resolve the issue as a result of this.

If you suspect that the issue lies with one of your sinks, remove anything from under the sink in question.

Alternatively, if the issue is caused by a lack of storage space, you might just create a passage so that the pipes can be reached without any difficulty.

- Review The Manual For Any Questions You May Have.

When the plumber first walks through the door, you should ask them a few questions. You may make the process easier for both you and the plumber if you have your questions prepared and an idea of what service you want.

Based on the questions you ask, the plumber will provide a full description of the situation. The more information you give the plumber, the better he or she will be able to understand the problem and fix it.

Some questions you might ask the plumber are:

  • What could have caused the problem?
  • When did you first notice it?
  • How to avoid such an occurrence in the future?
  • What attempts will you make to fix the problem before it occurs?

Planning For Maintenance:

When the plumbers you hired have completed their work, it's crucial to start planning maintenance ahead of time.

Before the plumber leaves your home, you can politely ask your plumber to show you how to change the filter or plan to schedule a time for them to come back at the required intervals.

You can change the filter as often as you want after they show you how. Basically, it's recommended that the filter should be changed every 3 to 6 months.
